Harare – President Cyril Ramaphosa and ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula have endorsed the election of Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa and described the recently held elections as “peaceful”, contrary to reports by the SADC Electoral Observation Mission that they failed to meet regional and international standards.
The two leaders attended Mnangagwa’s Inauguration in Harare yesterday in a show of solidarity. Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Mbalula said the elections gave Zimbabweans the chance to select their leader and the international community should respect the outcomes.
“We had the most peaceful elections in Zimbabwe and I am happy to say that people got the chance to select their leaders. The international community should respect the will of the people and avoid interfering in their internal affairs,” said Mbalula.
He also took a dig at the United States of America which said it would approach regional leaders to voice its concerns over the electoral outcomes to stop lecturing other nations on democracy.
“The U.S should stop lecturing other sovereign nations about democracy. They recently had their own problems when the Capitol building was stormed after the defeat of Donald Trump. As the ANC, we do not support nations that bully other sovereign states,” he said.
President Mnangagwa will rule Zimbabwe for another 5 years
