In order to combat corruption, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo claimed that the government must stop using public procurement.
With millions of rands being embezzled from the public coffers annually, public sector procurement is still susceptible to corruption.
Costs go up, fair competition is weakened, and public sector trust is eroded when there is procurement corruption.
Over a year ago, Zondo, who presided over the panel of inquiry on state capture, published a comprehensive report.
He rendered unfavourable conclusions against a few ministers and others involved in stealing from the State in one of the largest scandals involving corruption in the nation.
On Wednesday, Zondo joined President Cyril Ramaphosa at the national anti-corruption dialogue in Boksburg.
Zondo stated that even while legislation to reform the procurement system is in the works, it needs to be put into effect quickly.
“The levels of corruption in our country have reached completely unacceptable proportions, and unless something very drastic and effective is done, soon we will have no country worth calling our home.”
