In a recent development, the Statistics Amendment Bill has been successfully passed in the National Assembly.
The bill focuses on enhancing the capabilities of Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) and establishing the National Statistics System.
The bill, which has received widespread support, is expected to provide Stats SA with increased resources and tools to effectively collect, analyze, and disseminate statistical information.
Addressing issues raised by opposition parties regarding the safety and privacy of the data collection process, Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Itiseng Moroleng, emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting sensitive information.
“We will not allow ourselves to be distracted from the responsibility of government by criminals and criminal behavior, and if you believe that we should not have access to private homes purely because of criminal activities, then you don’t understand the burden of leadership in this country.”
Stats SA has previously announced that it would not share information collected from its surveys with third parties.
