Tropical Storm Filipo, is expected to bring heavy rainfall and potential flooding to  some parts of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

The South African Weather Service has issued a level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall in the region.

The storm, originating from Mozambique, is forecasted to impact areas such as Mbazwana, Coffee Bay, and Makhathini on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

The South African Weather Service has therefore issued a severe weather warning, alerting people in areas that are expected to be affected.

Weather Forecaster, Wisani Maluleke said Coffee Bay experienced 155 milliliters of rain in only six hours.

“I can mention areas like Mbazwana and Coffee Bay which is on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, and Makhathini, they have received a lot of rain. In Coffee Bay, we recorded 155 millilitres of rain in six hours and then Mbazwana, we recorded about 77 millimetres of rain and Makhathini 60 millimetres in hours.

“That’s quite a significant amount of rain which may lead to flooding. So, we are expecting 60% rain tomorrow.” Maluleke said.

The South African Weather Service anticipates that the rain will begin to clear by Friday.
