In a recent development, the Minister of International Relations, Dr. Naledi Pandor, has expressed her satisfaction with the United Nations Security Council’s resolution, which calls for a ceasefire throughout the month of Ramadan.

The resolution, which is legally binding, also emphasizes the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and stresses the critical need to expand humanitarian access to civilians residing in the entirety of the Gaza Strip.

Speaking on behalf of South Africa, Minister Pandor stated that her country has been advocating for a ceasefire for several weeks and was delighted that the Security Council had finally reached a consensus on a resolution.

“South Africa has called for a ceasefire many, many weeks ago and we are very pleased that at last the security council has agreed on a resolution calling for a ceasefire for a long-term period during this month of Ramadan, but also proposing that work should begin toward a permanent cease fire. I think this is welcomed resolution.” She said.

The resolution also emphasizes the urgent requirement for expanded humanitarian access to the civilian population residing in the Gaza Strip.
