The City of Tshwane has issued a plea to its residents to report any instances of the illegal sale of water that is intended for free distribution.

The city has recently become aware of a trend where service providers responsible for filling communal JoJo tanks in the Skirlik informal settlement of Mamelodi, Pretoria, have been diverting the water to private properties and selling it to other communities.

According to authorities, the practice has raised serious concerns as it deprives the intended recipients of their rightful access to free water.

The Tshwane Member of the Mayoral Committee on Human Settlements, Ofentse Madzebatela, said it is important to address the issue promptly.

“The provision of water is a basic human right, and the City is committed to fulfilling its obligations in this regard,” said Madzebatela.

“We urge residents to come forward with any information or evidence that can assist us in holding these service providers accountable.” He added.

The Skirlik informal settlement, located in Mamelodi, relies on communal JoJo tanks for their water supply.

Madzebatela also emphasized the importance of community involvement in resolving this issue. “Community members who have any information or evidence that can assist us in this regard, we are requesting that you contact us so that we can bring them to book.” Madzebatela added.
