Johannesburg’s City Power has issued a stern warning to its customers, stating that it will not hesitate to disconnect power supply and impose severe penalties for tampering with and bypassing newly installed smart meters.

The power utility has observed a trend of meter alterations during its ongoing initiative to replace outdated and malfunctioning meters.

Last year, City Power launched a comprehensive program to install smart meters across all its service delivery centers.
However, the utility has since discovered instances of tampering and bypassing of the newly installed meters, prompting swift action.

Spokesperson for City Power, Isaac Mangena, revealed that the entity is currently investigating the potential involvement of both contractors and City Power employees in these activities.
“Those residents who are found to have tampered with the newly installed meters will be disconnected and will be required to pay a reconnection fee.
The entity’s security management team is actively pursuing various leads related to internal collaborators, and we anticipate that appropriate action will be taken soon.” He said.

“City Power will not hesitate to hold accountable anyone implicated in any form of criminality, as has been demonstrated in recent times.” He added.

Johannesburg city power is determined to maintain the integrity of its metering system and ensure fair and accurate billing for all customers.
