In preparation for the upcoming elections in South Africa, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is scheduled to hold meetings with representatives from various countries and the heads of observation missions to ensure transparency and discuss the electoral process.
In an interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the United States Ambassador to South Africa, Ambassador Brigety Rueben conveyed that the United States would not interfere with the electoral process in South Africa.
“The United States of America will not interfere with the electoral process in South Africa.” He said.
However, a recent photograph of Ambassador Brigety alongside IEC officials, which was shared on social media, has raised eyebrows among the public with many individuals questioning the implications of this interaction and whether it could compromise the integrity of the IEC.
The representative from the Institute for Global Dialogue, Philani Mthembu has dismissed concerns surrounding the photograph emphasizing that casting doubt on the IEC’s integrity based on a simple meeting is unfounded. According to Dr. Mthembu, such allegations primarily reflect the motives of certain political parties attempting to score quick gains and undermine the electoral process for their own benefit.
South Africa is set to hold its elections on the 29th of this month.
