The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa has announced that the results of the country’s latest elections are expected to be released by Sunday.
This comes as millions of South Africans have participated the electoral process today. Over 27 million registered voters cast their ballots at more than 23,000 polling stations across the nation with more than 1.6 million people having applied for special voting, which took place on Monday and Tuesday.
Local and international observers have been closely monitoring the conduct of the elections, ensuring transparency and adherence to democratic principles.
IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Masego Sheburi said they will begin the process of counting immediately.
“As soon as the station is closed, we’ll start the process of counting. I estimate that by about half past 12, this evening, we will have a set of such few results, so typically small voting stations close to our offices.”
Sheburi also emphasized that the Commission plans to release the final results on the fourth day inorder to accommodate the additional work required by the third ballot.
