In a major blow to the South African cricket team, all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo has been ruled out of the remainder of the One-Day International (ODI) series against India due to a side strain. The announcement comes ahead of the second game scheduled to take place in Gqeberha today.
Phehlukwayo, who played a crucial role in the opening match on Sunday, top-scoring with 33 runs in South Africa’s total of 116, will be sorely missed by the team.
Ottniel Baartman, who was also part of the squad, has been ruled out of the series due to a similar injury and Beuran Hendricks has been called up to join the team to replace him.
No replacement has been named for Phehlukwayo, leaving the South African team with limited options to fill the void left by the talented all-rounder. The team management will need to assess their resources and strategize accordingly to overcome this setback.
The updated South Africa ODI squad now consists of Aiden Markram (captain), Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Mihlali Mpongwana, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne, and Lizaad Williams.
