In a recent development, the opposition party Umkonto Wesizwe (MK) has emerged victorious in its appeal to the independent Electoral Commission.

The party had lodged a formal complaint against the decision of the Electoral Commission dated March 28, 2024, which upheld Dr. Matsapola’s objection to the candidacy of Mr. Zuma, the second applicant.

The court has granted Umkonto Wesizwe (MK)’s application to appeal the decision made by the Electoral Commission.

“The application for leave to appeal is granted. The appeal succeeds. The decision of the electoral commission of 28 march 2024 in terms of which the electoral commission upheld Dr Matsapola’s objection to the second applicants candidacy Mr Zuma is set aside and substituted with the following “the objection is here by dismissed.” No order is made as to cost.”

The objection raised by Dr. Matsapola against Mr. Zuma’s candidacy has been dismissed, clearing the way for Mr. Zuma’s continued participation in the electoral process.

The independent Electoral Commission is responsible for maintaining fair and transparent elections in South Africa.
